Solenoid not responding

We at Imperial just got the pioreactor-relay-plugin installed on all our reactors and have one solenoid physically installed on a reactor to test the setup before assembling all of them. Unfortunately, when trying to test if it worked manually via the activities tab, the solenoid made no noise and stayed closed, no CO2 was flowing. I tested and the stirring worked so the activities tab still was working just fine. I also tested plugging in the solenoid into a different pioreactor and trying the same thing there and it still didn’t open. The solenoid does open if I use the manual valve so it is not jammed or anything like that. I believe I updated the configuration file properly, this is what it looks like:

Anything I am missing? @gerrit do you have insights? Next things to try?

The config looks good. Have you set up the Pioreactor for 12V operation, i.e., with the jumper in the “Aux on” position and the 12V power supply plugged into the Pioreactor HAT?

If so, what happens if you run pio run relay when logged in via ssh? Here’s my output:

pioreactor@leader:~ $ pio run relay
2026-02-06T16:40:56+0000 DEBUG [relay] Init.
2026-02-06T16:40:56+0000 DEBUG [PWM@GPIO-12] Initialized GPIO-12 using hardware-timing, initial frequency = 16 hz.
2026-02-06T16:40:56+0000 DEBUG [relay] Dodging disabled; running continuously.
2026-02-06T16:40:56+0000 DEBUG [relay] Starting relay ON.
2026-02-06T16:40:56+0000 INFO [relay] Ready.
2026-02-06T16:40:56+0000 DEBUG [relay] relay is blocking until disconnected.

We had not set up the piorector for 12V operation yet no, I don’t believe that was specified in the instructions but got it working now thank you.

Thanks for adding this to the assembly instructions @Teo - I have finished my review, great work, just a couple of edits then we can merge.

@gerrit two of the edits were removing items from the required and requested tools sections that I believe LabCrafter supply or should supply. Either way it would be great if these were included in your BoM.

See 5.ii - “Follow the Pioreactor guide to attaching a 12V power supply: https://docs.pioreactor.com/user-guide/external-power

Although I agree we should move it further up in the instructions so that you change the jumper while assembling the Pioreactor.

PTFE tape, luer locks, tube pincher and cap are in my BoM already and were supplied.
