Rebooting Journal Club?

I emailed to give permission to ue my email.

Also I did email the corresponding author Kun Guo and didn’t hear back. I can send him a reminder or someone else could try if they want.

I still had it in my calendar - sorry, didn’t realise that if you cancel it still stays in mine.

My understanding was that @Handfield already read the paper through DeepDyver, and I didn’t want to waste that effort, which is why I suggested going ahead with the paper. Maybe good to have a poll?

  • Yu et al 2025 - ex situ and in situ electrolysis
  • Sydow et al 2017 - growth medium for C. necator
  • Another paper - PREreview?

The whole area is new to me and I have time to read other papers, so I am happy to do whatever paper people want.

Sydow would be really useful to the AEP team, but I recognise it’s not 100% open source, and is 8 years old now. Also at least one of the team is unable to join us on the 22nd.

If anyone has time to source a relevant PREreview - ideally on some form of HOB cultivation by in-culture electrolysis - that would be absolutely amazing. Better still if it’s a short read, given the Christmas rush!

I have just emailed Kun Guo asking if he would be happy sending individual copes of Yu et al 2025.

Failing each of these I suggest we press on with Sydow - if you have time to read it, I’d very much appreciate if anyone else can spot what I believe was a typo that worked its way through to the maths in the supporting document.

Thanks for double checking with Kun Guo. Getting permission and preprints from the author would be the best outcome for this paper.

I tried looking for a paper we could do PREreview with but my understanding is that the paper needs to be a preprint that hasn’t been published? The only place I am aware of that has large numbers of biology preprints is BioRxiv, which seemed to have a pretty limited selection of recent papers in this area. I did find one preprint about genetic manipulation of C Nectar for enzymatic protein. Maybe there are other places to look or better ways to search BioRxiv?

Hi @Handfield we had a meeting with the AEP group on Friday who requested that we push this back into January, as a number of them would like to join us for the Sydow et al 2017 discussion but can’t make 22 December.

I also said I could try to reach out to some of the authors to see if they could join us for the club, and it was agreed that 10pm 3 nights before Weihnachten would be quite a big ask.

I also asked them to think about preprints. I imagine one of the best ways for us to know about preprints it to reach out to all the academics in the field and ask when they, or colleagues are planning to publish.

Having the authors there will be great plus now I have more time to get up to speed on the stats they are using in the paper. What is the new date?

Happy New Year! Hope everyone had a good holiday. Did we have a new date for journal club yet?

@gerrit do you want to set a poll for this with everyone here plus Sonja, Chris, their students & the authors, or would you like me to?

Happy New Year @Handfield and all! Yes, I had a wonderful break down in Devon. Hideous time getting back home, but I’m finally back at my desk.

[EDIT: and that night I went down with man-flu, finally back posting here on 15 Jan, sorry for the delay everyone…]

Please go ahead and schedule something - I’ll leave journal club in your capable hands from now on.

Hi @Dirk

It’s great to see you registered for our forum. We have a bunch of people very interested in the Sydow et al 2017 media formulation, so we would like to discuss it at a Journal Club.

Might, you, one of the original paper authors, or one or more members of your current research group like to join us for this discussion? If so if people could share their email addresses with me, I’ll send out a poll for the next journal club time and date.

As well as long standing and new AMYBO volunteers, I’m hoping that we can get a time that works for academics at Imperial College and Edinburgh University who have been using a media formulation derived from Sydow et al 2012.

Also, if you have any HOB / electrobioreactor papers coming out as pre-prints, we’d really love to discuss them in the Journal Club.

Kind regards

Martin
