PhD Opportunity

I received this brilliant PhD opportunity from Sonja Billerbeck at Imperial College’s Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein this morning:

I have an open PhD position (UK home fee) in my lab on precision fermentation with hydrogen oxidising bacteria.

Short description below, more info in the add:

Hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria (HOBs) are interesting for food production as they can use carbon dioxide from air as carbon feedstock. Thus, any food production process based on these gram-negative bacteria would not rely on agriculture. However, to use these organisms for bioprocessing, significant knowledge gaps in physiology, culturing and genetic engineering need to be addressed. This PhD project aims to expand our capacities to study and engineer hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria by developing genetic tools for different species, testing small-scale gas fermentors and using those to produce commerically relevant products.

The successful candidate will work at the cutting edge of synthetic biology, microbiology of non-model organisms, reactor development, protein and metabolic engineering.

Application Deadline June 17th, 2025.

Start date is 01/10/25.

I wouldn’t want to put words in Sonja’s mouth but might suggest that testing small-scale gas fermentors refers to an Aseptic version of our electroPioreactor.
